这一段很清晰的描写出了两个世界的人的生活。这让Esperanza更坚定了一定要有自己房子的决心，如果有流浪汉过往，也会给他们一个小小的阁楼落脚。

这一章讲的是妈妈
I could’ve been somebody, you know? my mother says and sighs.
妈妈说她本可以成为不同的人，有不同的人生。
She used to draw when she had time. Now she draws with a needle and thread, little knotted rosebuds, tulips made of silk thread. 以前是绘画，现在变成了孩子们衣服上编织的玫瑰花苞，丝绣的郁金香。

这里的标题a smart cookie不是好吃的曲奇，好吧~_~曲奇确实好吃。它等于smart person,另外a sharp cookie就是指不容易上当的人，精明敏锐的人。
