“Ah, that’s bad,” said Mr. Beaver, shaking his head. “That’s a very, very bad business. ..."
He started a new business recently.
[sing.]只做单数名词,即本文,事情(a matter ,an event ,usually with an adj.)
It's none of your business.(新概念二第一课)
“We might all try minding our own business,” said he. And that was the end of that conversation.
“Well, they were heading northward when they were last seen and we all know what that means.”
head v.朝向
这里有一个passive的用法,was done, We use a passive verb to say what happens /happened (etc.)to the subject.Who or what causes the action is often unknown or unimportant.
eg. Is this room cleaned (by John) every day?
There was a fight but nobody got hurt.
“Couldn’t we have some stratagem?” said Peter. “I mean couldn’t we dress up as something, or pretend to be—oh, peddlers or anything—or watch till she was gone out
Stratagem and strategy are sometimes interchangeable, but they are usually not synonyms.
The more common strategy is broader. Its main definitions are (1) a plan of action intended to accomplish a specific goal, and (2) the art or skill of using plans or stratagems, especially in war.
Stratagem is sometimes synonymous with strategy in military contexts, but its primary definition is a clever scheme for achieving an objective, often by deceiving an enemy. So while strategy can denote any plan of action, stratagem usually implies subterfuge or unconventional tactics.
“Oh, yes! Tell us about Aslan!” said several voices at once;
A voice came from behind .'Yes, this is Mary. Who are you?'
But the word has reached us that he has come back. He is in Narnia at this moment.
Word has been sent that you are to meet him, ...
If she can stand on her two feet and look him in the face ...He’ll put all to rights as it says in an old rhyme in these parts:
look sb. in the face 直视
put sth. to right 使...
I can stand on my own (two)feet.
Wrong will be right, when Aslan comes in sight,
At the sound of his roar, sorrows will be no more,
When he bares his teeth, winter meets its death,
And when he shakes his mane, we shall have spring again.
Don’t you know who is the King of Beasts? Aslan is a lion—the Lion, the great Lion.
Can you feel the love tonight,实在是太好听了。
“I’m longing to see him,” said Peter, “even if I do feel frightened when it comes to the point.”
long to do 渴望做某事 (long for+n./ving)
when it comes to the point是一个习语表示When one is forced to act or decide on something.
So things must be drawing near their end now he’s come and you’ve come.
must here means we feel sure sth. is true.
eg. You must be tired. (You must be joking.)
eg.Sth.draws near, I can feel it.
it’s on that that she bases her claim to be Queen.
就是因为那样她才(第一个that指代上面的事,it is that句型)
That’s why she’s bad all through,...
all through自始至终,整个
See, there was this wizard who went... bad. As bad as you could go. Worse. Worse than worse. His name was...
But in general, take my advice, when you meet anything that’s going to be human and isn’t yet, or used to be human once and isn’t now, or ought to be human and isn’t, you keep your eyes on it and feel for your hatchet.
take my advice和mark my words意思一致,后文有出现
ought to be (should be), we can use should when sth. is not right or what we expect.
eg. I wonder where Liz is, she should be here by now.(She isn't here yet, and this is not normal.)
that’s the castle on the sea-coast down at the mouth of this river ...
河口the mouth of the river 小地点 at
The snow was falling thickly and steadily, the green ice of the pool had vanished under a thick white blanket,...
eg.The heat grew steadily greater.
后面一个拟人把雪大写了出来,后文还有描写雪的其他词团the soft new snow, the silently falling snow
“Do?” said Mr. Beaver, who was already putting on his snow-boots, “do? We must be off at once. We haven’t a moment to spare!”
snow-boots(两只靴子是一对,+s)雪地靴还可以说snowshoes(分不分开都可以,两种情况都见过),riding boots马靴 top boots长筒靴
We haven’t a moment to spare! There’s not a moment to lose.
“There’s no point in looking for him,” said Mr. Beaver.与下文紧接出现的“The reason there’s no use looking,” said Mr. Beaver, ...
but the moment I set eyes on that brother of yours I said to myself ‘Treacherous.’
because she’ll want to use him as a decoy; as bait to catch the rest of you with.
Decoy is something used to put somebody in some direction, usually far from where they actually want to go.
Bait is something used to get or draw someone or something's attention or presence.(来自Hinative)
I am a slow walker, but I never walk back.
